Join us for an offering of pause and imagination. In support of A Cure for the Fatigue, by Francesca Lalanne, April Banks invites you into her world of Outlandish for afternoon tea and conversation. This special edition of April’s ongoing project, Tea Afar, explores themes in common with Francesca's work on view. You will be hosted in a historical house in Los Angeles’ Lafayette Square.
_____

April Banks is the producer of Tea Afar, a nomadic storytelling experience launched in 2016. Tea Afar was conceived as a salve — bringing us together across political borders. She has produced over 20 events in Los Angeles, Montreal, Sri Lanka, San Francisco, and San Luis Obispo that center first-person stories and hospitality traditions from around the world.

April is a visual artist and strategist who creates public art and public activations. Her practice time travels through historical archives and memories, questioning what we think we know of the past and how it informs our future identities. She is interested in building a commons that proposes moments of suspension from the weight of reality.

Her current worldbending series, Outlandish, grafts her lush dream world into speculative places and societies challenging us to reorient toward reciprocity over extraction. Outlandish has alchemized as a solo exhibition, public art sculpture, and a leap year almanac at San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (2024), and an immersive tea and performance at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2025). Volume 2 of the almanac will coincide with the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
